Tom Ro Haven for Equines and Children was registered as a NPO in 2012, although we started operating in 2009. Tom Ro is named after my mom and dad, Tom and Rosaleen (Ro) McCulloch. My mom died in 2006 and my dad in 2009. My nephew L/Cpl Luke McCulloch was killed in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan, 2 weeks before his 22nd birthday. It is because of these tragedies that we sought peace with horses and the idea of a sanctuary was formed. We wanted to give access to horses to everyone regardless of the financial means, in order for them to heal, but for them to also learn more about horses and animals in general. We help 100 children from places of safety every month. We also work with victims of human trafficking. Many people come to us individually to be with the horses and find peace and healing. We currently have a herd of 20 horses. Each one of these horses has come from a background of neglect and abuse. When we have the financial means, we do outreach programs and educate the owners in these areas and take out tack and feed, we also treat wounds and show the owners what to do. There are thousands of horses in the Cape Town area that urgently need our help. The abuse and neglect is unspeakable and this does not occur only in underprivileged communities. In the time we have been in existence, we have helped hundreds of people, we have provided food, collected and bought clothing, helped with school and college fees and helped people secure employment. We would love to do more, and our dream is to have an equine college that will teach various courses such as barefoot trimming, horsemastership, reiki etc. Students who can afford to pay, would subsidise those that cannot. We would like to be able to offer affordable livery options to those that what to own their own horse but cannot afford to. We will keep striving to reach these goals and to help as many horses and people as possible.
