The Hanepoot Brass Band is a popular 8-piece acoustic New Orleans style group but with an African Jazz repertoire, playing our indigenous goema and mbaqanga grooves.
Band-leader Jannie “Hanepoot” has a long pedigree in the SA music scene, among others spending 2 years on the road with the African Jazz Pioneers during the mid-1980’s, after which he toured with Johannes Kerkorrel’s Gereformeerde Blues Band and the crossover band Winston’s Jive Mixup. The Hanepoot Brass Band is his latest and most favorite project, and includes some excellent Cape Town musicians like saxophonists Simon Bates (Rudimentals) and Duncan Johnson (Little Giants), trumpeters Carlton Adams (Baruch Entertainers) and Siraaj Allen (Delft Big Band), renowned singer-songwriter Nick Turner (Sons of Trout, Misty Cliffs) on banjo, Zhaun Gorridon (Cape Town 7 Steps Minstrels) on tuba and seasoned jazz drummer Carlo Fabe (Tananas, Goema Club) on percussion. The band’s previous performance at Cafè Roux was sold out and a memorable evening. Expect some energetic and authentic originals as well as a few tributes, mostly with a Cape Jazz flavour.
