Nicole Theron & Michael Canfield, theron&canfield, make beautiful music together.
Their latest production is “You Want to Be There” – an evening of the songs of Leonard Cohen. The duo, but most especially Nicole, has been in love with Cohen’s music for decades. At age 6 her Dad taught her to read using Cohen’s lyrics as the text! The words have stayed with her ever since and her appreciation of the poetry has only deepened as time has passed.
As she said, “Doing a Leonard Cohen tribute is a bit like falling in love. It only works if you let it happen to you! I’ve been in love with Mr. Cohen for decades – so presenting a collection of our favourites as a tribute feels just right.”
Canfield adds, “During the Covid lockdown, I really came to appreciate the depth and breadth of Cohen’s work. Musically, lyrically, emotionally and spiritually it displays an unmatched richness that is wide open for performance and reinterpretation.”
Both Theron & Canfield released album projects prior to the lockdown. They’d been on the road touring in every South African province and selling out venues everywhere for almost nine months from mid-2019 to March of 2020. They were preparing for their first international tour, including STRAB in Mozambique and Bushfire in Swaziland, when Covid shut down the industry. “You Want To Be There” is the product of the time they’ve shared living, working, and live-streaming from their off-the-grid Homestead in Tulbagh.
“On Valentine’s Day the Karoo Saloon was treated to a performance that went beyond …. It was sacred. So much so that there was hardly a dry eye left in the room by the time they were done.” Mickey Mentz, news62.co.za
