Established in 2012, Tom Ro Haven is a registered NPO which rescues abused and neglected horses and ponies and rehabilitates them at their premises in Noordhoek, Cape Town. The horses and ponies at the Haven are then used in equine assisted healing programmes, focusing on children and young adults deemed to be at risk, or who have suffered from physical or emotional trauma.
By using horses to heal and awaken empathy, compassion and respect, the Haven aims to not only change the lives of horses, but to positively impact the local community too. Our aim is to RESCUE, REHABILITATE and EDUCATE – To rescue and rehabilitate as many horses and ponies as possible and maintain a safe ‘forever’ home for them; to develop and implement more equine-assisted healing programmes aimed at helping children and adults who are victims of human trafficking, have been physically or mentally abused, are suffering from substance abuse or have mental health issues. We rely solely on donations from the public and help from our wonderful volunteers to keep the Haven running. We gratefully welcome once-off or monthly donations to help cover our running costs.
Gillian McCulloch started the haven and named it after her late parents, Tom and Rhona. Her daughter Stephanie is a qualified choreographer and has three jobs, the incomes of which are used to help support the haven. They are assisted by a team of volunteers who clean the field daily, carry out maintenance on the structures, groom and feed horses and ponies, put horse blankets on when necessary and undertake other essential daily tasks as well as assisting in the various therapy programmes.
Unfortunately, Tomro has recently been broken into and many necessary items have been stolen, including horse blankets, halters and bridles, lead reigns, various medical supplies etc. and we are trying to raise enough funds to replace what we can before winter.
