Die Kaappunters
From the creators of “Die Wasgoedlyn”, Riku Lätti and his wife Jackie, known for collecting and showcasing diverse Afrikaans singer-songwriters in their live shows and currently on their television show airing on E-TV Extra (Saturdays just after 7PM) comes the new Afrikaans Rock band “Die Kaappunters” in collaboration with well known producer and guitarist Willem Möller, Afrikaans rapper and poet Churchil Naudé. Completing the line-up is rising star drummer Jean “Tunes” Marais and Mark Louis Ellis on Bass.
Die Kaappunters were born after Covid restrictions cancelled a planned Gereformeerde Blues Band tour and time and isolation at home meant the birth of a bunch of new Afrikaans Rock songs best described as melodic, comedic political satire. The songs were recorded on Strand’s side of False bay in Riku Lätti’s studio and sent to Willem Möller’s Sharp studio in Glen Cairn, close to Cape Point. When it came to picking a name for the new band it was almost as if the name picked itself: what do you call a band that comes from Kaappunt? Die Kaappunters of course!
The music is energetic and uplifting even though the lyrical content is at times quite hard hitting, it is laced with humour and pathos. Churchil Naudé with his easy flowing rap-style, critically acclaimed poetry in Capetonian Afrikaans nests neatly within the alternative rock style of music, Out of this collaboration emerges a truly uniquely South African Musical experience ready to showcase to the world what Die Kaappunters, the Afrikaans Rockers van die Suide, have been up to.
